Fashion lovers and environmental activists have become large supporters of thrift and secondhand fashion. Thrifts have since been popping up, riding on fashion trends and supplying lovers of fashion with hard-to-find, vintage and unique clothes. There is a belief that buying clothes in this way is a circular means of dealing with clothing waste. However, keeping clothes in use for longer periods of time is not the same as circularity.
Banana Thrift has since been rebranding and finding ways to take 'unwearable', untrendy and forgotten garments and upcycle them into new items that can be worn, giving them a new lease of life.
We have started to think about every step of the process and how best we can avoid 'greenwashing' and actively become more sustainable, not just for us but for our Mama Earth.
We collect our stock from friends in our community, if you'd like to be one of those friends click here. Thousands of bales come into Africa every year with second-hand clothes, and only a percentage of those get resold. We have begun gathering up the garments that are no longer sellable because of tears, stains or defects and re-stitching them with pre-used thread that is re-rolled locally in Woodstock - prepping them for a new closet and a new happy body.
100% recyclable packaging and a 'no sales' policy are two things we pride ourselves in. We have spent time pricing our garments at the best and lowest price possible so there is never a need for sales - every day is a sale.
Lastly, when you are no longer getting value from your item purchased from Banana Thrift, you can ship it back or drop it off at our collection spots and get compensated.
This way, our clothes become circular.
Welcome to our conscious shop, our circular family.
